Faith Formation
Several faith formation groups have been formed in St. Joseph's Catholic Community for all parishioners wishing to enrich their faith and that of others. These groups are open to anyone wishing to participate in them and are listed below.
W.I.N.G.S.
“WINGS” which is an acronym for "Women in Gods Service" is a faith based woman's group open to all women of the parish. Through the use of videos and faith based study programs the members can grow in and enrich their faith life and share their faith experience. The group is currently reading the book Truth for Your Mind Love for Your Heart by Alfred McBride, O Praem. “WINGS” meets Thursdays from 9:30 – 11:30 am in Thomas Hall. Please check the St. Joseph's calendar on the website to insure their meeting has not be canceled for a particular Thursday. For further information call 738–8770 or email St. Joseph's Religious Education Office".
HOLY FAMILY MOTHER'S GROUP
All mothers of any age are invited to come meet other Catholic moms and be encouraged in their mothering while learning how to incorporate our Catholic Faith into the lives of their families. Little children welcome! The group meets every Tuesday from 9:30 – 11:30am in Columbus Hall. On March 20th the group will be starting a new study book“Marriage: Small Steps, Big Rewards” by Dr. Ray Guarendi, for a five week period. Come meet other Catholic Moms just like you who are striving to raise strong Catholic families! For more information please call Julie Klekas at 738–9477.
“Breaking Open the Word”
“Breaking Open the Word class meets every Tuesday morning at 10:30am in Thomas Hall to study the Readings and Gospel for the following Sunday Mass. The group reads the two readings and the gospel together, after which Father Hermes Binlayo, S.J., who leads the group, explains the readings within the context of the times they were written and the message that the gospel writer was trying to convey. The group discusses what they have in common because the readings are all working together to convey a certain message for that week. Father does a phenomenal job, explaining not only what the readings are about, but also what was going on at the time, what each gospel writer's style is, and who their audiences were. Father Hermes also gives everyone a copy of his homily for the week based on the readings that are discussed, so that even if you don't attend the mass where he is speaking, you still get to have his homily. Everyone who attends this class enjoys it very much and all are learning more than they could have hoped for, some often staying to discuss things even after the class is over!
Father Hermes is a wonderful teacher who makes the bible understandable and he does so with a wonderful sense of humor and joy. We welcome more people to this class, so anyone who is considering it please come and join us for a truly rewarding hour.
Catholic Home Study Services
Catholic Home Study Service (CHSS), sponsored by the Vincentian community and the Missouri Knights of Columbus, has been offering free courses on the Catholic Faith for more than seventy years. It is based at Saint Mary's of the Barrens, in Perryville, Missouri. Father James G. Ward, C.M. is the Director of Catholic Home Study Service.
Catholic Home Study Service invites you to learn more about our faith by studying at home. Nine free courses, faithful to the teachings of the Church, are available. When you request a course, you will receive a textbook and a workbook with study questions. After reading a section of the book, you can send your workbook answers to us either over the internet or by postal mail. We will make whatever corrections are necessary and answer any questions you want to ask. All who complete the course receive a graduation certificate. There is no charge for the course, and no one will call on you. You may take the course alone or with friends or family members. www.amm.org/chss/chss.asp
Little Rock Bible Study of St. Mark's Gospel
Here is a great Catholic way to get to know your Bible and improve your prayer life. Our ten sessions will cover the Gospel of St. Mark. Little by little each week, you will do a little home study with a study guide and commentary. Then on Thursday evenings at 6:45pm we will gather in Mater Dei Hall for instruction, reflection, prayer, commentary and fellowship.
This is one that you will enjoy!
We need you to sign up in order to buy a sufficient number of study guides and commentaries. Deadline for sign-ups is Feb. 12, as we begin on Feb. 23. All we need is your name and number, and if you are in need of FREE childcare. Sign-up sheets can be found at the Church entrance, at the CCD Office, or just give us a call at 738-6432 - you'll be glad you did! Led by Fr. Dan Hussey.
“Why Catholic?”
“Why Catholic?” Is a program to help adults deepen their Catholic Faith and connect their faith to their everyday lives.
Small faith sharing groups meet for one hour per week for six weeks in the Fall and six weeks in the Spring. Most groups will meet after the weekend masses, but times are flexible depending on the group's needs. You can still register and join a group for the spring session.
Sessions start February 18th & 19th.
The cost per year is $10 to pay for the Why Catholic? books. Please call 738-8770 or email Cathy at sjccd@frontiernet.net for more information.
