Legion Founder Frank Duff wrote in the Legion Handbook: "The Acies is the great central annual function of the Legion, so that it is necessary to stress the importance of attendance on the part of every member. The essential ideal of the Legion, upon which all else is built, is that of working in union with and in dependence on Mary, its Queen. The Acies is the solemn expression of that union and dependence, the renewal - individual and collective - of the legionary declaration of fealty. Hence it is manifest that any legionaries who can attend, and yet fail to do so, have little or none of the spirit of the Legion in them. The membership of such persons is not an asset to the Legion."
ACIES* is a Latin word that the Roman Legion applied to an army ranged in battle array; appropriate to a ceremony in which the legionaries as a body assemble to renew their fealty to Mary, Queen of the Legion, and from her to receive strength and blessing for yet another year's battle with the forces of evil. We also recall the army allegory in our weekly meetings in prayer; "Who is she that comes forth as the morning rising, terrible as an army set in battle array?"
Ash Wednesday is a day of penance, fasting, and abstinence to begin the season of Lent. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of a solemn season of penance. Despite all its comparisons to the desert, Lent can be very fruitful for our spiritual growth! Beginning this season with the celebration of Mass and the reception of ashes is a sign of our commitment to God and to spiritual growth.

A Message from the Bishop
I want to thank you for the many ways in which you demonstrate God’s own love in your parish communities. In 2025, I ask that you pray with our Lord’s word in the Gospel of John to “Love one another as I have loved you” (John 15:12). This divine commandment is this year’s theme for our Catholic Services Appeal (CSA).
The Catholic Services Appeal is an essential way in which we ensure that our ministries continue. These ministries include the formation of seminarians and deacons, retired priests, youth and young adults, Catholic schools, and ethnic and lay formation — all of which are crucial to the life and mission of the Local Church in northern Nevada. Because of your prayers and generous contributions, this important work has been accomplished year after year.
I am grateful for your commitment to the Catholic Church and the Diocese of Reno. Please make a donation to the 2025 CSA appeal as part of your charitable giving.
Thank you for your positive response to this request and for your generous support of the 2025 Catholic Services Appeal. May the Lord bless you and your loved ones as we continue to carry out Christ’s mission in northern Nevada.
The Catholic Services Appeal brochure can provide additional information on the various essential ministries supported by this annual fund. I pray that you will join with other faithful Catholics in helping to carry out these ministries.
With every best wish and an assurance of prayer, I remain,
Yours in Christ,
+Most Reverend Daniel H. Mueggenborg
Bishop of Reno

Saint Blaise was a physician and bishop of the town of Sebastea in Armenia. Although the Roman empire had provided for freedom or worship, in Armenia many Christians were still being tortured for their beliefs.

Many of us grew up believing that being a Christian simply meant going to church and saying grace before meals, but being a follower of Christ isn’t about going through the motions. It’s about having a deep, personal friendship with Jesus—a relationship that gives purpose and meaning to every part of your life. Meeting the Messiah will take you on a scriptural journey through the lives of men and women who met Jesus in person and whose lives were forever changed.
Curtis Martin and Dr. Edward Sri invite you to encounter Jesus face-to-face through His word and hear the personal message He’s been telling you all along: You are not alone. You are beloved. You are His.
